This article summarises the theses of a five-volume work which the author has been publishing in Spain since 2006. The last volume, dealing with the collapse of the resistance to Franco by the Spanish Republic, was co-authored with Fernando Hernandez Sanchez. Three perspectives have been applied: firstly, the war policies of the Spanish Republic. The main points of Franco´s politico-military strategy are also included since he was interested in lengthening the war. Secondly, the hotly debated issue of the political, diplomatic and material support received by both sides. Finally, the reactions of the great European powers (England, France, Germany, Italy, and the USSR) to the events in Spain. The main emphasis is on the USSR. These perspectives are applied at two levels. The first level is narrative and analytical. The second contains a critical discussion of the theses defended by the most relevant authors who have dealt with the subjects of the first level. Two of the five volumes contain a large amount of primary relevant documentary material in two CDs. Another two volumes contain documentary appendices. All five volumes are based on the research carried out by the author(s) in some forty official and private archives both in Spain and abroad.

Este artículo presenta las tesis esenciales que contiene una pentalogía que el autor ha venido publicando en España desde 2006. El último título, relacionado con el desplome de la resistencia republicana, tiene a Fernando Hernández Sánchez como coautor. La guerra civil se enfoca desde tres ángulos. En primer lugar, la obra se concentra fundamentalmente en la política de guerra desarrollada por la República española, aunque también se analiza la estrategia político-militar de Franco, tendente a una guerra larga. En segundo lugar, hace hincapié en la muy debatida cuestión de los apoyos exteriores, políticos, diplomáticos y de material, que ambos contendientes recibieron desde el exterior. En tercer lugar, examina la reacción de las grandes potencias del contexto europeo (Alemania, Francia, Gran Bretaña, Italia y la URSS) a los acontecimientos de España. El análisis se desarrolla a dos niveles. El primero es de índole narrativa y analítica. El segundo entra en una discusión crítica con las tesis de los autores más relevantes que han abordado la temática examinada en el primero. De los cinco volúmenes dos contienen una amplísima base de evidencia primaria relevante de época reproducida en sendos CD. Otros dos, contienen apéndices documentales. Todos están basados en la investigación efectuada por el autor en cerca de cuarenta archivos españoles.
