Abstract
The initial history of Russian Orthodox Christianity in America goes back to the Vitus Bering expedition of 1741. The new period of the Russian colonization of America is related to the name of G. I. Shelekhov (1747—1795), born in Ryl’sk (Kursk province). There were quite a lot of Ryl’sk citizens in the various American expeditions of the late 18th and early 19th century. There arises a little known episode regarding a connection with Ryl’sk and the Russian colonization of Hawaii.
