Abstract

The article examines the military service of Tsesarevich Nicholas Alexandrovich, the future Emperor Nicholas II, in the Life Guards Preobrazhensky Regiment in 1892—1894 under the command of Grand Duke Konstantin Konstantinovich. The article reflects the history of personal relations between the Tsesarevich and the Grand Duke, details of the service of the heir to the throne in one of the oldest and most famous regiments of the Russian Guards. The author attempts to show the peculiarities of the Tsesarevich's formation as an officer of the Russian Imperial Army, who knew well all military traditions, cared for the soldiers, and took part in manoeuvres, exercises and camp training sessions on an equal footing with everyone else. The author proposes the conclusion that the strict discipline and responsibility inherent in Emperor Nicholas II was the result of his military service.
