Abstract

After and during the inclusion of Central Asia to the Russian Empire, one of the pressing problems in the development of the region was the problem of slavery and the slave trade. Russian diplomat Nikolai Valeryevich Charykov, who was appointed to the post of diplomatic official under the Turkestan Governor-General, and then a political agent in the Bukhara Emirate, took an active part in the process of solving this problem. A variety of archival and published documents (reports, memoirs, epistolary sources) allow us to present a picture of his activities. Charykov’s activities in Central Asia aimed at solving the problem of slavery and the slave trade were noted in Merv and Bukhara. In Merv, Charykov became a participant in its accession to Russia and the ban on alaman (robbery), and in Bukhara he became a conductor of the practical implementation of legal norms prohibiting slavery.
