Abstract

The article is an attempt to assess the potential of historical politics in contemporary Russia in the context of the Decree of the President of Russia dated May 08, 2024 “On Approval of the Foundations of the State Policy of the Russian Federation in the field of historical enlightenment”, and the tasks set in this document. Using the example of countries where historical politics was actively pursued — Poland and, to a lesser extent, Turkey, the author shows that the statement about the high effectiveness of historical policy for the consolidation of society is at least partly false, on the contrary, historical policy often provokes an internal conflict and, therefore, hardly contributes to the achievement of the tasks of historical education set by the president. On the contrary, the author sees the future of historical enlightenment in building a healthy memorial culture based on the synergy of historical studies, the education system and amateur cultural and historical projects that are gaining popularity in contemporary Russia.
