Abstract

The article presents the results of an experiment investigating the potential of textual descriptions of coats of arms, which is blason. It is expected that any person cognisant of heraldic vocabulary and heraldry itself would be able to reconstruct the image of the arms by its textual form only. Two dozen of heraldists were offered to draw 4 coats of arms randomly chosen from different historical epochs of Russian heraldry from 18th century to present day. People, unfamiliar with heraldry, and graphic neural networks formed the control group. The author analyses typical mistakes and how they might have affected application of heraldic signs and their research.
