Abstract

Russian craft guilds were organized under entirely different conditions than Eastern European corporations, mostly because they were designed to serve entirely different purposes. However, some working principles of European guilds were borrowed and applied in the Russian Empire. One of such particular features well adopted into Russian craft culture is tradition of vexillological representation. The article deals with peculiarities of craft guilds banners in Russia, investigates their appearance and application including representative, identification and decorative functions through Russian guild signs, known as “znachiks”.
