Abstract

The figure of Metropolitan Neophytes of Gana (or of Giresun) has been attracting the attention of scholars for a century, thanks to his unusual life, reflected in his diary and letters. This article is devoted to the very unusual journey of the Metropolitan, who came from the centre of the Orthodox world, Constantinople, to the small town of Sviyazhsk near Kazan. The Metropolitan was not the only Greek with such a fate, but thanks to his letters, we know about his feelings and thoughts. The letters also reveal a large circle of Neophytes' Constantinople acquaintances, mainly at the Sultan's and Patriarch's court, which allows us to establish the channels of influence of the hierarchs in church and secular politics. At the same time, the role of the translators of the Ambassadorial Chancery in the decision-making in Moscow is also revealed.
