Abstract

The paper is concerned on interpretation of two little-known eighteenth century Russian maps relating to the history of imagination and administration of a frontier space between Imperial controlled Siberian territories and Kazakh nomads lands. This wide limitrophe zone was delimited in decades of 1730—1750s, by the Old Ishim and the New Ishim lines in a case closely examined in this text. These two border lines attracted our attention as the first example of efforts to total control of geographical space through modern practices in the region. In addition authors offer brief historiographic review and some theoretical theses. These theses can serve to rethink approaches to the history of borders and the border administration of the Russian Empire, which is usually considered within the framework of two simplified oppositions “ordered state practices — dangerous and unpredictable border communities” or “noble indigenous peoples — malevolent forces of colonialism”, as well as highlight a number of plots in the history of Siberia and Kazakhstan in a more compliant way.
