Abstract

The article attempts a “back translation” of the De administrando imperio’s passage about the cities of “outer Rhosia” (cap. 9.3—7) from Byzantine-centric positions into the original “language” of the mixed population of Rus’. The “cultural translation” undertaken in the article, ch. 9 shed new light on the diplomatic channels of Byzantium and, in particular, made it possible to judge local intermediaries in its contacts with Russia. Apparently, the basis of the “Rhosian dossier” was information received through Slavic translators from the Russian elites of Kiev (presumably from among the Rurikovichs), which explains the depth of knowledge in the language and culture of the Kiev group of Rus that DAI demonstrates. Neither Old Russian nor Old Scandinavian texts preserved direct analogies to the “outer Rhosia” list. The considered indirect analogies also do not provide solid grounds for the geographical attribution of this list, but allow us to make an assumption about the spatial imagination of Rus’, elements of which may be reflected in ch. 9. At the heart of this imagination is the Baltic-Northern sailors’ view of the urban configuration of “Western” Rus’, structured along the river routes from the Baltic to the Black Sea.
