Abstract

The purpose of the article is to generate the researchers’ interest for a unique and practically unexplored source of the period of the Dutch Revolution of the 16th century — the “Union of Utrecht” (1579). Based on the published original text, the author analyzes the articles of the document, divides them into groups and gives a description of each of them. For the first time in Russian historiography, considerable attention is paid to the personality of William I of Orange’s younger brother, Jan van Nassau (John VI of Nassau-Dillenburg,1536—1606). In 1578—1581 he held the post of stadhouder of the Netherlands regions of Geldern and Zutphen and played a crucial role in the preparation and adoption of the Union of Utrecht on January 23, 1579, the participants of which pledged to conduct joint military operations until the victorious end and fight for the independence of the Netherlands from Spain. This military-political Union of the northern Netherlands provinces, originally conceived as a temporary agreement, and not as a constitution of a new state, eventually became the legal basis of the Republic of the United Provinces, and the Union of Utrecht is one of the most important documents in the history of the Netherlands.
