Abstract

The article focuses on the underestimated presence of Persians in Byzantine culture after the Muslim conquests of the seventh century, challenging the prevailing scholarly narrative on Byzantine-Eastern relations. By analyzing Byzantine perceptions of ancient Persians and contemporary Persian-Muslim culture, the author identifies the role of Persian motifs in Byzantine religious thought and reconstructs the memory of Persian martyrs in church tradition. The author discusses the existence of churches in Byzantium dedicated to Persian martyrs, where their relics were preserved. Analysis of poetic calendars, names, and sigillography provides additional material for reconstructing Byzantine memory of Persian martyrs from the eleventh to the fifteenth centuries. Persian saints were integrated into Byzantine religious memory, with some Byzantines adopting their names for baptism or monasticism. Sigillography indicates instances of association between certain standard Byzantine baptismal names and Persian saints. Despite centuries having passed, Persian saints continued to be revered by ordinary Byzantines and played a significant role in religious memory. The discussed material significantly revises our understanding of Byzantine cultural identity.
