Abstract

The article summarizes the experience of the author’s research work with medieval Islamic geographical writings and maps and is devoted to the question of the peculiarities of toponyms found in them and the relationship of the latter with modern geographical nomenclature. This problem is examined mainly on the basis of the geographical work of the outstanding Arab geographer al-Idrisi (12th century), in particular, those of his materials that relate to Eastern Europe. A number of al-Idrisi toponyms have been identified that cannot be directly compared with a modern geographical map. The study of the geographical specificity of such place names, as well as their functions in al-Idrisi’s system of ideas about Eastern Europe, led to the conclusion that place names denoting large geographical objects, such as a river or mountain system, are a collective geographical image created by al-Idrisi himself based on fragmentary information. The functional role of such a toponym was to embody a geographical idea that evokes a complex of various associations among the audience to whom the medieval geographer was addressing.
