Abstract

The paper analyzes studies on the personality of Kekaumenos, the author of the “Strategikon”, an unusual source for the 11th century, which goes beyond the scope of a military treatise and contains information on various aspects of military, civil, domestic, economic and family life. The text has been preserved in a single 14th-century manuscript (in which it is titled “Strategikon”), brought to Russia in the 17th century by Arseniy Sukhanov and kept in the Department of Manuscripts of the State Historical Museum. Issues related to the identification of Kekavmen, his worldview, social status and property status are discussed. The researches of Soviet, Russian, English, French and Greek historians are considered, including the studies of J. Buckler, P. Lemerle, G. G. Litavrin, Sh. Roueche and M. A. Morozov.
