Abstract

The given article, which is based on the materials of the Central State Archives of the Republic of North Ossetia-Alania, examines the regional aspect of the large-scale action of the Soviet authorities aimed to seize church valuables in 1922. The centennial anniversary of the tragic event in the life of the Orthodox Church forces us to once again analyze the actions of the Soviet government, whose ultimate goal was the split of the Church. The local authorities tried to discredit the clergy and active believers against the background of the attitude towards the seizure of church property. A grave consequence of the action was the emerging split among the clergy of the Vladikavkaz diocese. However, to a large extent it was provoked by the active participation of the bishop of the Vladikavkaz episcopal see in the renovation movement. At this stage, the majority of the Vladikavkaz clergy remained loyal to Patriarch Tikhon and expressed disapproval of their bishop’s actions.
