Abstract

The article attempts to assess the reliability of the hagiographic reports about the existence of the post of baskak in Borovsk and other Russian cities in the 14th century and to determine the reasons for attributing this account in the currently existing sources to the 13th century. Source-study analysis of the Life of Pafnutiy of Borovsk, the respective sections of the Volokolamsk Patericon, and the chronicle articles textually related to these works, reveals the sequence of the appearance of various redactions of the respective body of accounts and allows them to be brought to a common source — an unpreserved tale of Pafnutiy called by this author The Tale about Martin. Basing on the revised internal chronology of the Tale, which differs significantly from the previously adopted one, the article clarifies the historical context of the described events and proposes a new interpretation of them. Particular attention is paid to identifying various temporary layers in the hagiographic accounts about the baskaks and the latter’s legendary background.
