Abstract

The names of medieval armorials were formed historically and were assigned to them as the armorials were introduced into scientific circulation. Most often, names were given by event, original or later owner, author, scribe, publisher, place of discovery or storage, by a coat of arms, or by region. Sometimes heraldry books exist under two or more names that reflect the historical fate of the manuscript. Attention to the names of heraldic books allows us to understand the principles of the formation of this tradition, it is important in the formation of the national heraldic tradition. The armorials were named according to the same principles as all medieval scrolls and codices. The historicity and variability of names, by which we today know specific collections of coats of arms, their double names are best demonstrated.
