Abstract

The article deals with the figure of Pseudo-Frederick II of Hohenstaufen, who had also known as Tile Kolup, or Dietrich Holzschuh. He appeared in the Rhine-Area in 1284 and gained some support for more than a year. After his bright but short “political career” the impostor was burned by the legitimate king Rudolf of Habsburg on 7 July 1285. The author analyses, why such social groups as German Jewish community and German citizens particularly were giving him their favor and what reasons and expectations did each of them have to support the impostor. The author shows, that these social groups gave Pseudo-Frederick their support because they suffered under the reign of Rudolf of Habsburg. Supporting the impostor they showed the king that they had not been satisfied of his methods of ruling the country. So the figure of Pseudo-Frederick was neither more nor less than a sign, an unspoken word in the dialogue between the king and his people. Therefore, rules and moves in this political communication was clear for the both sides, ruler and various social groups of late 13th century Holy Roman Empire. The author also reconstructes some aspects of spiritual culture of the Jewish community and everyday life of citizens, how they represented their hopes, how they demonstraited their loyalty or disaffection. The author also analyses the remembering of Frederick II in late 13th century Germany and came to the conclusion that the most remarkable images of power people still had been having in their mind were the Emperor as a crusader and the ruler as a protector of the Jews. These images of power helped the impostor to “be recognized” as a true Emperor.
