Abstract

The theme of everyday life of Catholics in the USSR in the 1920s — 1950s. represented by a significant number of monographs and articles. Many published and unpublished historical documents has been introduced on this issue. At the same time, modern historians have the opportunity to supplement the picture of religious life in the USSR in the late 1920s — mid 1950s. with literary and memorial testimonies. The article discusses the reflection of the life of Catholics in Soviet Russia on the evidence of O. V. Volkov's autobiographical novel “Sink into Darkness”. The authors conclude that this testimony of the hardships of prison and camp life, written under Soviet censorship, requires a critical attitude. There are several reasons for this. Firstly, prison and camp living conditions did not contribute to revelation. Secondly, the author himself has witnessed so many life cases that in a novel, especially after the prescription of years, he could get away from the details, surrendering to his impressions. Thirdly, ignoring the details could be dictated by the continued state control in culture. The author’s disposition towards Catholic characters does not exempt his narrative from common stereotypes of perception. The origins and meanings of these stereotypes require a special study. But without them, the picture of the everyday life of Catholics in the camp would not be complete.
