Abstract

When historians look at the origins of the Second World War, they often focus on well-known events like the Czechoslovak crisis in 1938, or the failure of Anglo-Franco-Soviet negotiations in 1939 and the resulting Nazi-Soviet non-aggression pact. Even I have done so, and yet there were earlier failures of mutual assistance against Nazi Germany, which are less well-known but just as important in understanding why war broke out in September 1939. One such failure was the talks between France and the Soviet Union between 1933 and 1935. In the current article the author focuses on these negotiations.
