Abstract

The article deals with the perceptions of the Russian military, diplomats, statesmen about the policy of Britain in Iran in the late 19th — early 20th century. The desire to understand the motivations and goals of the rival was important to determine an effective political line. However, after the 1907 Convention signing, old ideas and stereotypes served as a certain impediment to the development of bilateral relations between Russia and Britain, acting as a source of mutual suspicion, mistrust and excessive caution, which prevented the improvement of relations between two empires. At the turn of the century, various ideas were spread in Russia about the essence of British policy, as well as about the prospects of Russian-British relations in Iran. However, the idea that the Russian-British rivalry still exists was very popular, especially at the Court, among the military circles, and Russian diplomatic and military representatives in Iran. Diplomatic efforts of Izvolsky and Grey to rapproche the positions of two empires often met resistance of people who should carry out decisions of Petersburg and London in the Middle East.
