Abstract

The article presents how the Crimea Crisis of 2014, which heightened tensions between Russia and the West, has influenced the views of Russians on Western society and its values Basing on the analysis of the results of the sociological researches. It has been revealed that the young generation of Russians has been least affected by the current periods of a chill in relations between Russia and the West. Young people may be more likely than representatives of the elder generations to give more positive estimations of the Western countries. The exceptions are the short periods of the highest confrontation between Russia and the West during the Russian-Georgian (2008) and the Russian-Ukrainian (2014) conflicts. It is noteworthy that the Russian youth considers itself more as a part of the Western (European) cultural and historical tradition. The data of the research conducted by the author long before the events in Ukraine also showed a fairly balanced and tolerant attitude of young people toward Western civilization. Most of the post-Soviet young people are not confrontation-oriented. They consider the current complexity of interactions between Russia and Western countries to be temporary. This makes a new generation of Russians the force that can build a meaningful dialogue with the Western countries in future. Today, when there is a noticeable fatigue within the Russian society from the confrontation with the West and the peak of the political crisis has passed, this becomes particularly important.
