Abstract

The article analyzes the dynastic marriage in 1816 between Grand Duchess Anna Pavlovna, sister of Russian Emperor Alexander I, and Prince William of Orange, successor to the Dutch throne and later, in 1840—1849 — King of the Netherlands William II, through the prism of implementation of Russian foreign policy interests. Having gained respect and fame in Europe, to a large extent due to the defeat of Napoleon in the Patriotic War of 1812, as well as to the liberation of European countries, including the Netherlands, from the French oppression, Alexander I was distinguished not only by his military genius, but also by his diplomatic talent, which helped him to turn the above-mentioned dynastic project into reality. In spite of all obstacles created by another influential power in those years — Great Britain, the plans of which to enter into dynastic alliance with the House of Orange in 1814 ended in failure, the marriage plan initiated by the Russian Emperor proved a real success. By using archival sources, most of which are of Dutch origin, the author explores the circumstances and reveals the reasons, which facilitated the successful realization of this marriage that strengthened the ties between Russia and the Netherlands for many years.
