Abstract

The article presents an analysis of the court proceedings described in the “Life of Lady Falkland” (1640s). The Life of a Catholic convert Elizabeth Cary, Viscountess Falkland, was written by her daughter — a Benedictine nun at Cambrai (Anne or Lucy Cary), and represents a mixed-genre work, a combination of a devotional manual, a conversion narrative, and a biography proper. The “Life” describes an examination of a woman accused of witchcraft, and also an examination of Lady Falkland (1636), which took place after she had taken two of her underage sons from their elder brother’s house with an intention to send them abroad to study in a Catholic school. Both scenes are analysed in detail to establish the extend of the biographer’s knowledge of English legal practice, and to understand why these descriptions are at all present in the text crated by a woman for women, and, more, for nuns bound by the rule of enclosure.
