Abstract

The article is conceived as an addition to the anthology “Old Rus’ in the light of foreign sources” (2009). It contains excerpts from the Danish medieval annals preserving information about Old Rus´ in the original and their Russian translations with introduction and commentary. In the introduction the author presents a brief overview of Danish annalistics, describes the information about Old Rus’, explains the reasons for its inclusion in the Danish annals and discusses the realities behind these reports. The author claims that the information on Old Rus’ in the legendary part of the ‘Annales Ryenses’ is the result of the annalist’s rethinking of Saxo Grammaticus’ work ‘Gesta Danorum’. Many annals mention that the Danish king Knut V travelled to Rus’ in 1152. In the author’s opinion, the reason for that travel was that Knut tried to find support from his Russian relatives in the struggle for the Danish throne. In the article the unusual interest of the Danish annalists towards the fate of the “Russian princess” Sophia is noted. It could be explained by the fact that she was the sister of Knut V, the wife of Valdemar the Great and the mother of Knut VI. The article demonstrates that these short reports of the Danish annals could be used as additional sources in the study of the Russian-Scandinavian interactions during the Middle Ages.
