Abstract

The study focuses on the connections between Lithuanian intellectuals and the famous Russian pedagogue and scholars Nicolas A. Rubakin in 1917—1926 and on use of his experience for the development of public education in Lithuania. Rubakin was a creator and organizer of self-education system in Russia. During his years of practice he had several thousands of correspondence pupils, helping and supporting them in their self-education. The main specificity of Rubakin’s pedagogical method was the individual attention to every pupil. He tried to find out his pupil’s life conditions, the level of education and personality before recommending him books for self-education and giving advises. Lithuanians were also among his pupils before 1917, and in 1923—1924 teachers from the town of Alitus and university students of Kaunas asked for his advise in choosing books for their work and study. Rubakin’s scientific contacts with Lithuanian scholars took place already before the revolution of 1917. In 1917—1919 the Lithuanian students of the University of Fribourg read books of Russian religious philosophers from Rubakin’s library in Clarens while writing their thesis’s. There were well known in future scholars and politics S. Šalkaiskis, I. Tomašaitis and others. His popular science books and works on the method of self-education were of special interests for public education in Lithuania. In 1923—1925 several books were translated in Lithuanian and published in Lithuanian publishing houses “Raides” and “Kulturos Bendrovė”. Still in 1923—1925 when Christian Democrats were in power in Lithuania and the Catholic clergy increased their interference in education some Rubakin’s books based on the theories of N. Kopernik and Ch. Darwin were prohibited for reading. After the Lithuanian Peasants Union and social-democrats won the election in May, 1926, there appeared a chance to carry out Rubakin’s method of self-education as a nationwide program. The main role in this program was assigned to special educated instructors and librarians who worked with readers using the method of individual approach to every person. The program was supports by the members of Lithuanian government. But these plans couldn’t be realized because of the coup d’état in December, 17, 1926 and the establishment of A. Smetona’s regime.
