Abstract

In order to reveal the Latvians ideas on Russian the use of ethnicons in Latvian oral tradition and in 66 Latvian writers’ autobiographies is analyzed in the paper. Russians in the historical legends and Latvian folk anecdotes are perceived as own far closeness of co-existence in the physical space and strange for their mentality and behavior. The inner closeness of Latvians is the deep basis of Russians alienation, characterized by lack of interest in others. The analysis of the Latvians writers autobiographies demonstrates that Latvians did not feel and realise space of Russian as their own. The alienation of Russia and Russians was provoked by russification policy of the Russian Empire. This policy stimulated crystallization of national consciousness of Latvians and strengthened their spiritual isolation from the Russian, although contacts with Russians were broadening. Absence of Latvians spiritual integration in space of Russia is one of the internal prerequisites of Latvian political separation from Russia and formation of their own state.
