Abstract

The paper discusses an episode in the court life of Einhard (c. 770—840) connected with his long illness and refusal to obey an order of the Empress Judith (d. 843) during the dynastic conflict of 830s. The episode is reconstructed from Einhard’s letters to the Empress, to the Emperor Louis the Pios and other persons of the royal milieu. The author analyses the political situation of the 830s, the translation of the relics of SS. Marcellinus and Peter from Rome to Francia (827) described by Einhard, as well as other legal and narrative sources. Through comparison of various pieces of evidence not only Einhard’s actions, but also his motives have been reconstructed.
