Abstract

The article deals with one of the episodes of the struggle for the Alexandrian Patriarchal throne in the middle of the XIX century. Comparing known sources and new archival documents, the author explores the course of events, identifies the main participants in the church-political struggle and their interests. Special attention is paid to the study of the participation of the Patriarchate of Constantinople and its individual hierarchs in this struggle, as well as the position of Russian diplomacy. The study revealed interesting details that characterize the decision-making mechanism in the Patriarchate of Constantinople of the time.
