Abstract

The article deals with the written sources concerning the Russian miters of the late 16th — mid 17th centuries for Oriental patriarchs. These miters were similar to the patriarch’s headdress of the pre-Nikon times. On the occasion of his enthronement, Patriarch Nikon ordered himself a miter in Constantinople, and in the middle of the 17th century a new type of patriarchal miter appears in the Russian Church. The study of the miters dispatched from Moscow to the Oriental Patriarchs not only reconstructs the history of the Russian works of art in the Orthodox Orient, but also gives a notion of the evolution of the patriarchal miter in Russia proper.
