Abstract
The article deals with the pottery from the burial grounds of the early nomads in the Western Kazakhstan. Pottery was placed in the graves of the representatives of all social stratums of the nomadic population. Сeramics was actively used both in household and in religious ceremonies. Specially produced vessels for burial rites are found in the graves, as well as utensils already used in the household, including those repaired. The present research was conducted in the context of the historical-cultural approach to the study of ancient pottery within the procedure developed by A. A. Bobrinsky. The method is based on the application of binocular microscopy and experimental work. Sarmatian pottery is typically tempered with grog, with the appearance of the temper of talc at the end of the V century BC, and the temper of bone at the end of the IV century BC. Dung and wool, gruss. The vessels were hand-formed, produced without the use of the potter's wheel from strips, coils and slabs of clay. The surface of the vessels was smoothed with fingers, with cloth or leather, with subsequent burnishing. The vessels were decorated by means of cutting or stamping, the pattern could be carved with finger or sculptured. The vessels were fired in fire-pits at temperatures in the range of 650—1000 C. Sarmatian pottery had peculiar characteristics associated with the nomadic nature of the Sarmatian culture. Nomads were not rigidly attached to one and the same clay pit. Clay and silt did not undergo elutriation before moulding. Animal waste and animal products (manure, wool, bone, leather, sheepskin) were actively used in manufacturing pottery. Imported vessels from Central Asia and the Caucasus can also be found in the sarmatian graves, as well as their replicas made by Sarmatian potters. The examination of the surface of the vessels and experimental work let the author make an assumption about the functional use of some types of “censers”. The pottery of the Sarmatians of Western Kazakhstan was similar to the pottery of the entire Southern Urals and had also specific characteristics.
