Abstract
The article is devoted to the Russian stage of the biography of the outstanding Egyptologist and Archaeologist Franz Vladimirovich Ballod (1882—1947), whose life was split between Russia, Latvia and Sweden. The paths of becoming a scientist, the impact on his scientific worldview of various cultural traditions are analyzed in this article. Particular attention is paid to the period of work F. V. Ballod on the Volga Region, in Saratov University, where he made an invaluable contribution to the Golden Horde archeology. In 1924, F.V. Ballod forever left Russia. The article concludes that it was a deliberate, not a random choice. Ballod’s emigration has undermined his contacts with colleagues who remained in Soviet Russia. In 1940, Professor Ballod left Soviet Latvia for Stockholm. The article shows that the “Russian experience” of a scientist carried a seal of deep contradictions. On the one hand, work in Russia was associated with the development of him as a scientist, on the other hand, he critically perceived many imperial practices aimed at unification through Russification. Departure from Russia in 1924, and then the exil from Riga in 1940 after the beginning of Sovietization, gave rise to deep criticism and skepticism regarding Soviet power. At the same time, they did not put the professor on the Russophobic position, did not tear him away from the Russian cultural tradition. Until the end of his life, he used scientific developments obtained in the Russian period, both in concrete, practical terms, and in the field of methodology, scientific approaches, etc.
