Abstract
Article deals with several trends of development of the Southern Low Countries in 13th — early 15th centuries that were connected to the frequent urban revolts during this period. The author tries to define the influence of the conflicts to the appearance, institutionalisation and the change of the role of such urban communities as ‘patriciate’, craft-guilds, etc. The well-known historiographical concept (its routs can be found in works of Henri Pirenne and his school) argues that the wave of revolts in the towns of the Low Countries in the late 13th — early 14th century led to the widespread infiltration of the representatives of the craft-guilds into the town councils of big cities. Despite the fact that such trends were not general and the revolts were not always successful as it was shown in some recent researches it is important to find out what traces of success of the professional communities we can see in cases when they had achieved their political goals. Commonly we can affirm the granting of the new privileges to the craft-guild, their particition in urban militia and the appearance of their own emblems that were used actively during the following revolts, other conflicts or ceremonies and processions. The author tries to show the similarities and the differences between the large-scale revolts against the rulers and more frequent conflicts and disturbances inside the towns that were connected for example to the tensions between different crafy-guilds. Conclusions made for Flanders are compared with the data of the urban conflicts in Brabant and Liege.
