Abstract
This article considers some problems of Soviet-Canadian scientific-technical and economic cooperation, which were common, in general, to this kind of international activity of states with different social systems during “peaceful coexistence” in the 1960s to the 1980s, but developed in specific North American context. The critical impact of bureaucratization as a systemic factor of the Soviet economy is traced along with deepening of technological lagging in some key economic sectors, agriculture, for instance. Political stimulation, which played a special role in bilateral business ties, due to objective factors such as geographical remoteness, similar economic structure, was strengthened by geopolitical interests of the USSR in North America and the Canadian course of economic nationalism, but had its limits and was replaced by natural pragmatism by the late 1970s. The experience of economic cooperation with western industrial states, including Canada, had far-reaching consequences, stimulating scientific and political thought in the USSR, prompting for market reforms of the 1980s.
