Abstract
In the spring and summer of 1968, when attempts to reform the ineffective communist model were made in Czechoslovakia, the experience of the dramatic events in Hungary of the autumn of 1956 were fully present in historical memory. Hungarian events were remembered at that time by everyone: the reformist communists (the “architects” of the Prague Spring), who did everything to avoid the excesses of the “Budapest autumn”; their opponents who, on the contrary, constantly frightened the compatriots (and Moscow) with the possibility of developing events according to the “Hungarian way” of 1956; the Soviet leadership which since March, at meetings of the Politburo, now and then paralleled the Czech and Hungarian events; and Western observers who predicted the USSR's military intervention as the most likely option for resolving the crisis around Czechoslovakia.
