Abstract
The problem of perception of the enemy, the attitude towards him is part of a broader historical and psychological problematic of “we and them”, “his own, the stranger”. In an armed conflict, the problem is exacerbated to the utmost, speaking in hypertrophic forms: a potentially dangerous “alien” turns into a real deadly enemy. In those periods when the conflict only smolder, myths on the one hand are called about the potential enemy, on the one hand, designed to expose the person in an unpleasant way, to ridicule, make him fearless and helpless in the eyes of public opinion. In addition, these myths are called upon to raise national pride: to exalt “their own”, to make them proud of their homeland and not to be like the enemy in anything. Article is dedicated to the problem of the formation of the enemy’s image in the compositions of Moscow commander-in-chief Fyodor Rostopchin. This topic is considered on a wide background of the frankophobia’s wave that has risen at the end of 1800s in the Russian society.
