Abstract
At the turn of the 16th — 17th centuries, France is experiencing one of the most difficult periods of its history. After long and bloody religious wars, a fragile peace is established in the country, and on the throne a new dynasty of French kings — the Bourbons. The coming to power of a new surname was complicated by the large number of pretenders to the throne, the threat of losing the country's independence and the long absence of a legitimate heir to the throne. Already in the reign of Henry IV, in order to strengthen in general the authority of royal power and in particular the Bourbon dynasty, measures are being taken to legitimize the power of the new king. The article deals with the issues of the mythologization of power, which most acute arise when the throne is transferred to a new family name. On the example of the Bourbon dynasty, the methods used by the rulers are used to emphasize the legitimacy of their rule. In particular, an attempt is being made to legitimize power and politics, through artistic images created by Peter Paul Rubens, commissioned by Maria Medici.
