One of the 13th century Rolls of Arms represent Simon de Montfort with two coats of arms. One is the family arms of the Montforts, while the other born on the banner, as suggested by some historians, is the mark of the office of Lord High Steward of England occupied by Simon. The article is an attempt to find the origins of the arms and the purpose why it was used by the Montfort family.
