Abstract
The article is principally dedicated to the history of the peacock in the coat of arms of the city of Serpukhov in Moscow region. Since the middle of the 14th century the figure of the peacock was often used in Europe both in family and municipal heraldry, often as canting arms. The peacock had no negative connotation, and therefore, in the absence of fixed designations of the city, F. Santi reproduced the image so familiar to him from the European heraldic tradition in the coat of arms of the city.
