Abstract
The article is devoted to the inscriptions on the early printed Cyrillic books (15—18 centuries) as an important type of historical source. The large number of records of various kind was left on the pages of these books over the centuries of existence. The article is based on the database compiled by the authors from 2008, and it currently contains over 13 420 records covering the period from 1575 to 2008 identified at 5 052 copies of 1 868 printed Cyrillic books. While the early editions of the Triodion, printed by Schweipolt Fiol near 1492, the most recent publication appearing in the database records are around 1800. Database records include early printed Cyrillic alphabet books produced under the auspices or with the participation of archeographs at Moscow University, reflecting collections of the Perm, Tver, Rostov and Yaroslavl regions, as well as modern collection of old believer communities at Verhokamye and Southern Vyatka. Taken separately, inscriptions on the books are very informative themselves. Taken together, they allow us to consider many of the social and cultural processes in the dynamics. For example, it enables to see the destiny of book culture of Russiaю It’s possible to follow the path of individual instances from the printing press to the Museum or private collections. Records show existed in past social practice like the “communication book”, deposits of books in the Church library, a blessing or a curse, etc. Records of members of the Royal family in early printed editions reflected the peculiarities of the state policy by first Romanovs. It is noteworthy that the majority of the inscriptions were committed by Mikhail Fedorovich (1613—1645): namely, to his share had the difficult task of rallying the Russian society after the time of Troubles. One means of achieving this goal was the Printing house (restored around 1619), which products are actively delivered by Mikhail Fedorovich in different churches and monasteries in vast state. In addition, the records allow to reconstruct the genealogy of individual families, as well as to reconstruct the Genesis and the fate of entire social groups (in the article this story was discussed on the example of “black clergy” of the 17 century). “Family Chronicles” and the commemoration usually reflect the demographic processes. The applied possibilities are given in the article for genealogical scheme of eminent entrepreneurs of Gurevich (in the 17 — 18 centuries) and province officials Podlesnova (in 18 century).
