Abstract
The article deals with the question how to use documents of trial and inquisition for reconstruction of social process in Russia of the 18th century. Special attention was paid to such aspects of researcher’s activity as search and identification of primary sources, peculiarities of trial documents’ analysis and choice of approaches and methods which could be used for studying of this category of primary sources. The author comes to the conclusion about the necessity of comprehensive approach to the documents which contain data related to trial cases. It bases on a careful textual study of key trial documents (petitions and inquisition documents) and work aimed to formalize information of the primary source in order to create a data base.
