Abstract
The article analyzes academic discourse in South Africa on the issue of school history curriculum after 1994. The author draws a parallel between global reforming of state and public structures and changes in teaching of history at school. The article is based on white papers on school education in South Africa and author's interviews with key historians and experts from the Cape Town University. As a result he comes to the conclusion that first years after the end of apartheid history was united with other social sciences. Yet in 2002 after discussions in educational circles and activities of lobby groups it reemerged as independent subject in South African schools and was separated from other humanitarian disciplines.
