Abstract
This paper describes one hundred and ten years of citizen activism that has shepherded Fort Ross State Historic Park from a small and unknown stretch of remote land to its current status as an international landmark and pilgrimage site. The author anecdotally surveys the key eras of growth and development from 1906 through today to describe how — and why — private individuals and groups contributed millions of dollars and volunteer hours to ensure the site is preserved and cared for. It is because of these personal connections that Fort Ross continues to be a bridge between Russia and the United States.
