Abstract
The author of the article describes the opinions of the British press about the military actions of the Russian army during the First World War. The article emphasizes that the aim of most publications of the British press was to keep public opinion calm and to convince the public that there would be an ultimate victory. The journalists created an idealized image of Russia as an ally, capable at any cost of carrying the war to a victorious end. Pressmen often ignored the problems of the Russian army, exaggerated the scale of offensive operations and tried to minimize the scope of the retreat. They used typical journalistic methods to influence the reader: vividness, emotionality, expressiveness, idioms, epithets and metaphors.
