In the postwar years, the Saratov region became a major industrial and construction complex. Especially developed chemical, engineering, electrical industry. The region became a major supplier of building materials in areas that were severely damaged during the war. In the late 1940's and early 1950's, many enterprises of this sector were carrying out the orders of the largest construction sites in the country: the Volga-don canal, the Kuibyshev and Stalingrad hydroelectric station. In the implementation of huge construction program participated Wolski cement plant, new enterprises for the production of crushed stone in Pugachev, Ivanteevka and Arsovska areas. The 1950's can be considered the beginning of «big chemistry» in the Saratov region: the construction of chemical plants of national importance in Balakovo, Engels, Saratov. Successfully began to develop the fuel and energy complex – gas, oil, shale, heat and power. Improved the structure of machine-building complex. Are businesses of precision engineering, instrumentation, electronics. The largest companies in these sectors, placed on the northwestern outskirts of Saratov, served mainly the needs of the military-industrial complex of the country. Completed the construction of other important industries, such as technical glass plant, sugar plant, fat plant. In 1951 was founded producing the first of the Saratov refrigerators. In 1952, commissioned the city's first trolleybus line from the train station on the street. V. I. Lenin before the Revolution square. Large processes in this period occurred in the agricultural sector. The main goal was to ensure the country's food supply, primarily grain. In 1953—1956 in the Saratov region was cultivated and about a million hectares of virgin lands. The historical event was the opening of traffic on the road bridge over the Volga river, connecting the left Bank with the regional center. Saratov bridge became one of the largest in Europe: its length — 2 840 meters. At the turn of the 1970's in the Saratov region is growing and actively developing and drainage system were constructed hundreds of kilometers of irrigation canals, several large irrigation systems. All this affected the development of agricultural production and the countryside. Irrigation stimulated the development of not only grain production but also livestock. Until the late 1980's continued positive economic growth in the area. The largest buildings of those years: factories of rubber products, self-propelled earth-moving machinery, nuclear power plant in Balakovo, the mill complex fabrics and plant transport trailers in the town of Balashov, factories synthetic detergents and motor lances in Engels, TPP-5 in Saratov and others. Saratov region in terms of its production capacity, capacity building organizations, the volume of agricultural production, the level of scientific and technical knowledge and training of qualified personnel was during this period, one of the largest in Russia and occupied an important place in the territorial division of labor.
