Abstract
Up to the 20th century heraldry of cities and towns of Portugal was regulated by general heraldic rules and traditions. The creation of coats of arms for settlements was streamlined by the reform of 1930, but the state law defining the procedure and rules of coats of arms creation and adoption was introduced only in 1991. Its regulations became the basis for heraldry of all settlements and its application formed a unified policy in that field. Despite the fact that coats of arms of the cities constitute a part of national heritage, the situation with the visualization of a city in Portugal by means of heraldry and confronting it trademark is far from being unambiguous. A Russian translation of the Portuguese law of 1991 is attached.
