Abstract
The originality of Western European cultural and historical world, which helped to create European self-identification during the high Middle Ages, was based on unique religious and spiritual notions, revealed in sensual and visual figures. The birth of coats-of-arms, as one of such figures, appeared in 12th century and was predefined by spiritual changes, which all of the Western European countries were undergoing. The essence of those changes was in religious justification of earthly things as symbols, coinciding such of the City of God, in growth of subjective vision of heavenly and earthly things, widespread development of typical and concrete spiritual and social individual essence. By the end of the 12th century knightly order, being one of such essences, has established. Each knight was considered an ideal, a warrior of Christ. In conditions of domination of religious symbolic speculation and growth of spiritual subjectivity, that fact contributed to the settling of typical knightly emblems, which were actually specific artistic signs. At the same time the knighthood culture showed the controversies of religious and social character, which made coats of arms symbolic signs of not only religious feelings, but also earthly relationships.
