Abstract
The article is devoted to studying Britain's resettling colonies on a sample of Australia and New Zealand in Russia from the 1850's up to 1917. Investigating the different spheres of their economic and social life, the government institutions and their profound reforming, first of all, the extension of election rights, the implementing of the reforms in education, labour and land relations, social welfare, Russian scholars and journalists were unanimous in their high appreciation of the achievements of those “political and social laboratories” and had created their images as highly developed and prosperous societies which were supplemented with effective mechanisms of the democratic governing, active government involvement in the economic matters, resulted social transformations, and, as the result of it, enjoying the high living standards.
