AbstractThis paper analyzes the perception of the policy of the Soviet Union in the Middle East in the early postwar decades by Washington. On the one hand, despite the continuing anti-Soviet rhetoric, the administrations of Eisenhower and Kennedy were inclined to take a pragmatic approach. Actions of American and Soviet diplomats were often identical. But on the other hand, there were reassessment of opportunities of the USSR and exaggeration of Soviet influence in the region, which had far-reaching consequences.
