AbstractThe article is devoted to contemporary views on the origins of the Monroe Doctrine. Special attention is paid to the question of the possible influence of the rumors of the planned Holy Alliance intervention to the New World on the political decision-making on the eve of development of the Monroe Doctrine. Underlining the role of George Canning’s proposals as an immediate cause for the promulgation of the Monroe Doctrine, the author stresses that the doctrine launched the almost a century of “collaborative competition” (term of Jay Sexton) between Washington and London for the Spanish and Portuguese heritage in the New World.
